Education administrators are responsible for the leadership
and management of educational institutions. They offer
direction and
leadership, so that the institution operates effectively.
Administrators
can be found in schools, colleges and universities,
businesses,
correctional institutions, museums, and other non-profit
organizations.
Education administrators set goals and design the policies
and
procedures to carry them out. They also supervise a variety
of people,
including teachers, counselors, and support staff.
Labor Trends:
Employment of education administrators is expected to
increase as a result of the large number of administrators
who will be
retiring in coming years, and the growth of additional
educational
institutions.
Personal Attributes:
Education administrators typically possess confidence,
determination, creativity, motivation, and leadership.
Administrators
must also be able to communicate and negotiate with a
variety of
different people.
Required Skills:
Making sound decisions and organizing people and projects
are essential. Since much of an administrator’s job
involves interacting
with others students, parents, teachers and the community
they must have
strong interpersonal skills and be effective
communicators. Knowledge of
management principles and practices, gained through work
experience and
higher education, is required.
Required Experience:
Most education administrators begin their careers in
related careers, and prepare by completing a master’s
or doctoral
degree.
Working Conditions:
Education administrators have many responsibilities.
Working with faculty, parents, and students can be
fast-paced and
interesting, but demanding. Some jobs may require
travel. Many
administrators work more than 40 hours a week,
including some nights and
weekends. Many administrators work even when school is
not in session.
