Career Description:
Data security administrators protect a company’s
computer-based information banks. Security problems have
intensified
with the proliferation of networks, since skilled hackers
from outside
an organization have increasingly been able to gain access
to internal
networks. Data security administrators keep information safe
from many
perils, including floods, fire, or power outages, fraud,
theft, invasion
of privacy, and viruses.
Labor Trends:
Computer jobs in general are expected to be among the
fastest growing jobs. With the increase in networks, there
should be
many jobs for data security specialists.
Personal Attributes:
Data security administrators must be able to maintain
confidential information and demonstrate tact,
discretion, and
diplomacy. They also need excellent interpersonal and
customer service
skills, as well as an ability to read, analyze, and
interpret technical
procedures.
Required Skills:
Data security administrators need skill in technical areas
such as programming, systems analysis, and
telecommunications.
They must also understand the company’s business
in order to
know what computerized functions the company cannot afford
to lose.
Required Experience:
Generally, data security specialists must have at
least a bachelor’s degree. A technical industry
specialty, business
background, and hands-on experience are also helpful.
Working Conditions:
Almost any company or organization concerned with data
security could employ a data security specialist.
Larger companies are
more likely to have this position as a separate
function, however, since
smaller companies frequently employ one person who
performs a variety of
jobs, including the monitoring of data security. Data
security
specialists are also employed by specialized
consulting firms which do
this kind of work on a contract basis.
