Career Description:
The vice president information services has overall
responsibility for managing information systems and
computing resources
for an entire organization. This person must determine the
needs of the
user community, make sure that the organization is providing
systems
that meet those needs, and act as liaison between upper
management and
an organization’s computer staff.
He or she has
executive
decision-making power over all departments falling under the
umbrella of
Information Services. These departments may include Computer
Operations,
Systems and Programming, Technical Support Services, and
Network
Services.
In smaller organizations, this position
can be
hands-on, with direct participation in day-to-day
activities, or direct
supervision of technicians.

The continuing need for skilled managers will spur faster than average
employment growth.
Personal Attributes:
Because they manage information systems and computing
resources for an entire organization, vice presidents
must be able to
budget and strategically plan for the organization’s
computing
needs. They need to be interested in advances in
technology.
Required Skills:
IS vice presidents must be able to evaluate the use of
technology in the organization, and recommend improvements
in technology
(hardware and software upgrades). They
manage back-up and security systems and
develop a disaster recovery plan for their
organization.
Additionally, they oversee the organization’s
communications network
and manage user services such as Help Desk and training.
Required Experience:
A BS in computer science or business administration is
usually the minimum requirement, but an MS or MBA may
be necessary for
senior level positions in large organizations.
Working Conditions:
Technology and information systems managers spend most
of their working hours in an office environment. Most
managers work a
minimum of 40 hours per week and may work much longer
to meet deadlines.
Some of these professionals may feel considerable
pressure in meeting
goals within short time periods or tight budgets.
