Career Description:
Manufacturing is a broad industry comprised of companies
that make components, parts and assemblies that must adhere
to technical
specifications.
Distribution is a large, dynamic field, that also offers
many career
opportunities. Distribution is concerned with the analysis,
planning,
and control of activities concerned with the procurement and
delivery of
goods. Distribution occurs in many businesses, like
transportation
carriers, manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers.
Labor Trends:
Employment in manufacturing is expected to decline,
primarily due to increased use of labor-saving
technologies and
machinery. Other factors affecting employment in the
industry include
foreign trade, overall economic conditions, and
environmental
regulations. Despite the continuing decline in employment,
qualified
workers still will be needed to replace workers who retire
or leave the
industry. In production occupations, opportunities will be
best for
individuals with the technical skills and training to
handle
technologically advanced machinery.
Job opportunities in distribution may vary from year to
year, because
the strength of the economy dictates the amount of product
being moved.
Personal Attributes:
People that go into manufacturing and distribution
careers must get along well with people because they
often work in a team environment.
Employers seek workers who speak well and have
self-confidence, initiative, and tact. Employers also
look for responsible, self-motivated individuals able
to work with
little supervision. Flexibility and an aptitude for
technology will be
increasingly important as automated processes become
the norm.
Required Experience:
There are several courses of study that would help
make someone successful in this career field. Some
suggested courses
are: algebra, geometry, keyboarding, CAD, and English.
Working Conditions:
Manufacturing and distribution careers are typically
arranged by shifts. Warehouse workers and assembly
workers usually work
indoors and are closely supervised. In contrast,
transportation and
distribution workers cope with variable weather and
traffic conditions.
